We are pleased to bring to the market a Yukon concession that embraces the tradition and quality of hunting. This is Chris Widrig’s outfit. Chris polished his guiding skills in the Cassiar until he had the great fortune of acquiring this concession in 1986 and has been there ever since. Chris has sparked a tradition that has been passed down through stories from generation to generation of outfitters, some of those stories being told by, none the least Jim Shockey, who’s Yukon hunting outfit borders this concession to the South.
Let’s talk about the concession first, shall we? This 8,900 sq kms territory takes in a virtually untouched, spectacular area of the Yukon, which produces some of the best trophy animals in the world. Did I say in the world?! Yes, that’s a pretty big statement, although it is true.
This concession is accessed through horse, jet boat and float aircraft, there are no roads. Several major rivers run through the concession including: the Snake, Bonnet Plume, Rackla, Nadaleen, and of course, the mighty Stewart which is the southern boundary. Access to the concession is not easy with a 6 day horse ride or a 120 mile flight from Mayo to the nearest main camp. There are several lakes to access the area as jumping off points, as well as an airstrip (with 2 other airstrips just outside the area). There are two well equipped base camps, Bonnet Plume Lake and Goz Lake, as well as over 40 tent spike camp locations throughout the area. Horses play a large role in this operation with most of the spike camps being accessed through horseback.
Game is abundant, although in many cases access is limited, which ensures that from year to year trophy animals may be taken and clients are afforded the hunt of a lifetime in the Yukon. Alaska Yukon Moose, well they are just big, unbelievably big. Pictures never do justice, although this may be the exception, as you can see from the photo gallery these moose look big, and take note those hunters look mighty happy too, which is the indication of success by an outfitter.
Dall Sheep; the white ghost; the ones with the curly horns; you bet they are here! What breathtaking country, especially with all of those little white dots on the hills in front of camp. Nothing more needs to be said here as the pictures speak for themselves.
Unlike many locations in North America, here the Caribou are plentiful; plentiful, majestic and trophy size. Over the years Caribou has increased in value, largely due to the loss of availability across North America. Here is one of the last bastions to be able to take a great Caribou, where hunters come to enjoy the stalk, the location, and the harvest.
As Grizzly opportunities dwindle, this concession year after year produces some great bears. This location not only affords ungulates to grow and reach maturity, it has also created an ideal meal, which allows Grizzlies to thrive.
8,900 sq kms is a lot of ground to cover and in reality many locations are seldom hunted, if ever. The two main camps are accessed via floatplane and allow an ideal jumping off point for hunters arriving by aircraft. From here hunters will either be shuttled to other lakes and teamed up with their string of horses, wranglers, and guides or in other cases, hunters will ride out direct from main camp with over 40 tent spike camp locations along the trails to choose from. As you must understand, this is big country, country you may only see parts of over the years.
The main camps are well set up each with a lodge and cabins for clients, guides and wranglers. Equipment is all in place and is extensive having been accumulated over many years to fit the operation. There is also a Super Cub aircraft which will meet your needs within the concession and truck and horse liner at the staging point. A key to this outfit are the horses, with 28 mountain horses included who know their way around. Naturally all of the rigging and paraphernalia you require to take care of those horses is in place and ready to go.
Hunters have enjoyed this concession for over 35 years with the present outfitter. Stories have been passed down from father to son to grandson of clients who have ridden these trails, walked these slopes and enjoyed camaraderie, scenery and the thrill of the stalk.
This is the one you’ve been waiting for. This is the first time this concession has been on the market in over 35 years and I hope you enjoy it for the next 35 years. This is a classic horse outfit, the way hunting has been practiced from the beginning of time in these areas, not common today and certainly gone tomorrow; true hunters seek outfits run in this manner. I have trouble describing this area, although while flying over it I was in awe by the beauty and expanse of this land. Virtually untouched country where only a few select hunters have the opportunity to see and experience it. For thousands of years moose, caribou, sheep and grizzly have pounded these trails into existence. Only for a brief time in history have there been horses travel these trails and carry modern hunters. Be the outfitter who carries on providing those hunters with a once in a lifetime experience. Call me before you have to wait another 35 years.
