Dunedin Territory
Northern British Columbia and Alaska Highway here we come! This almost 4,000 square kms territory has it all, opportunities abound and most everything is in place. This outfit is one of those where you can make your home right in the territory, run a B & B and create other opportunities for the rest of the year. Main camp is located in the SW corner of the territory, 78 miles west of Fort Nelson and only 500 yards off the Alaska Highway, yet in a wilderness setting.
The territory starts at the Liard Highway and Alaska Highway intersection west of Fort Nelson and generally speaking the southern boundary of the territory is the Alaska Highway out to Mile 385. The territory runs to the north over to the Toad River and down to the Liard River. The large drainages in the southern portion are Kiedo Creek and the Dunedin River. The territory has several large burns along with good moose and elk habitat. Access into the territory is quite limited.
Base Camp consists of log lodge, 4 log cabins, barn, corrals, hay hangar, meat shed, corrals, etc. From this location there are trails to 6 other outpost cabin camps and various wall-tent spike camps. These camps are connected throughout the territory with a good horse trail system. Use the entire kit and caboodle for hunting or summertime pack trips.
Main species for this outfit is Moose, Elk, and Black Bear. Round that off with Stone Sheep, Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer, Mountain Goat, Wolf and Lynx and you have got yourself an outfit that allows flexibility when booking clients. The area lends itself to be hunted via horse, and boat with some ATV access. Locations accessed off the Alaska Highway and Liard Highway allow for 4x4 access into previously un-hunted drainages. With a little bit of organization and a decent crew there’s money to be made in this territory or keep it small with a couple of guides and enjoy living the dream.
We all know the cost of delivering clients through air charter and of course the old saying, “If you have time to spare, go by air.”; weather conditions in the north being unpredictable. With this outfit you can stay on the ground and still deliver an excellent trophy hunt, keep your clients happy and have less fuss and muss, as well as expense. There is a huge advantage in being able to reach your base within an hour and a half from Fort Nelson, which has all of the amenities needed including an airport for your client’s arrival.
There you have it, great hunting along with an unbelievable cross-section of species. The opportunity to run other outdoor activities as well as a B&B, live at the main camp year round with good access to Fort Nelson. Although this outfit has been underutilized for several years there has been substantial upgrades and maintenance performed.
